There is always a new fad that comes along and takes people by surprise. For the last few decades, doctors and parents have been discouraging young people from using tobacco. Countless medical studies have proven the deadly effects of tobacco use, and with those tests, we have seen the rates of smoking and chewing tobacco significantly decline. However, as history has proven repeatedly, evils are easily repackaged and sold as something “better.”

Today, most parents do not have to worry so much about their teens coming home smelling like cigarette smoke. Yet, perhaps they notice a pleasant smell such as watermelon or cherry on their breath. It may be easy to dismiss this scent, but parents need to ask questions.

Vaping is the latest trend among teens and young people. Vaping is the act of inhaling vaporized liquid from an electric device known as a vape pen. Recent studies show that one in five high school students are now using vaping devices. Vaping companies have begun adding flavoring additives to the liquids to entice younger people to start using them. According to a PATH study, 81% of current youth using vaping devices say that the appealing flavors are the primary reason they started using them and continue to use them.

Parents need to understand the adverse effects that vaping has on oral health. While vaping may be advertised as a “safe alternative” to smoking, it is anything but safe. The ingredients propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are found in vaporizing liquids. These products are damaging to tooth enamel, gum tissues, and saliva production, and when the health of the mouth deteriorates, the rest of the body is compromised. Diseases such as heart failure and diabetes, as well as miscarriage and preterm deliveries, have been linked to poor oral health.

Dentists across the United States are voicing their concerns over the growing popularity of vaping by young people. Vaping is a dangerous habit that can have detrimental effects on a person’s smile and overall health. At Just Brush My Teeth, we want to encourage everyone to take an active role in optimal oral health. Quitting bad habits such as vaping, smoking, chewing tobacco, and excessive alcohol consumption should be a priority.
