It may look fine and you may be thinking it is getting the job done, plus you know that you can get another one on your next visit to Just Brush My Teeth. What you may not know is that dentists and toothbrush manufacturers recommend your toothbrush be replaced every three to four months. If you are consistently using your brush properly – brushing for two minutes at least twice a day every day – your toothbrush is getting a workout. Using your toothbrush past its prime could mean you are not brushing your teeth as effectively.

ELIMINATE INFECTIONS AND REINFECTIONS

Old toothbrushes become frayed and worn and are unable to remove the plaque and food debris adequately to prevent oral health problems. Your chances for dental decay and gum disease increase as your toothbrush ages. Additionally, since they are intended to remove bacteria from the teeth and gums, it is safe to assume they hold plenty of bacteria.

Keeping family toothbrushes in a container together is a way to spread germs. Reinfection can also occur if you do not replace your toothbrush after an illness. Replacing your toothbrush not only keeps your teeth and gums in a healthy condition, it also prevents the spread of germs from one person to another.

SIGNS YOUR TOOTHBRUSH NEEDS REPLACING

Ideally, you know when your toothbrush reaches three or four months of use but if you are in doubt, there are signs:

  • Frayed bristles – One of the most obvious signs a toothbrush has seen better days and needs replacement. You are not brushing effectively if you are a brushing with a toothbrush that has frayed bristles.
  • Your teeth do not feel clean after brushing – This means your toothbrush is not getting your teeth clean. If they do not feel smooth and slick after brushing, plaque is being left behind along with decay inducing bacteria.
  • You have been ill – Especially now with a serious virus lurking in the background and constantly morphing into a new strain, it is important to replace your toothbrush once you recover from your illness so you can eliminate the possibility of becoming reinfected by the germs on a contaminated toothbrush.
  • Your toothbrush has an odor – If your toothbrush has a bad smell, it is definitely time to get a new one. The smell could be from mold or bacterial growth. Whatever it is, keep it out of your mouth!

If you cannot remember when you last had a new toothbrush, it is time to add it to your shopping list. Make a super fresh start by scheduling an appointment with Just Brush My Teeth and we will ensure your teeth are perfectly clean for your brand new toothbrush.
