Every day you have to make thousands of choices. Most of them are small, and some are so insignificant that you probably don’t realize you make them. For instance, did you think very hard about what deodorant you put on this morning, or did you simply reach for what was in the cabinet? See, some decisions require little to no active thought.

Perhaps it is the same when it comes to what you choose to drink. Maybe you just open your refrigerator and pull out whatever is in there. That simple choice can have a significant impact on the health of your smile.

Water is the best beverage choice for all occasions. Water is all-natural, contains no harmful ingredients, and is beneficial for the entire body. Water helps to flush out toxins from your body to help prevent infection and disease. It also provides necessary hydration and quenches thirst. While it is tempting to reach for a tasty sugary beverage, understanding its impact on your teeth can help you make a healthier choice.

Soft drinks, fruit juice, sports drinks, energy drinks, and alcohol are all popular beverages in the United States. The American Cancer Society reports that approximately half of adults in the United States consume sugary drinks daily. Adolescents drink soft drinks daily, with ten percent having three or more each day. The consumption of sugar can be extremely dangerous. High sugar consumption has been linked to cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and, of course, obesity.

Even if you choose a diet soda to quench your thirst, you are not doing your smile any favors. All soft drinks are highly acidic. Even though diet sodas do not contain sugar, they do contain multiple acids: phosphoric, citric, and tartaric – all of which can damage your teeth. The risk for dental erosion, cavities, and tooth decay is exceptionally high any time you choose a sugary or acidic beverage over water.

At Just Brush My Teeth, we encourage you to make water your beverage of choice. Water is beneficial to the entire body, and it will protect your teeth from damage. If you do indulge in a tasty beverage, be sure to rinse your mouth with water afterward to flush away sugars and acids that are left behind.
